The Why Mom Deserves a Diamond® writing contest gives teachers a meaningful classroom activity that strengthens creative writing skills while helping students express gratitude for their mothers.

Students have fun becoming powerful writers through the use of metaphors, similes, and other figurative language techniques. The contest supports Common Core standards of figurative language, encourages concise creative writing, and inspires students to reflect on the person who has helped shape their lives—their mom.

We award genuine diamonds, amethysts and garnets to thousands of students for their creative writings.

Each year, a grand-prize student is awarded a diamond, and thousands of other students are recognized with genuine amethysts and garnets for their outstanding creativity.

For winning families, the experience is unforgettable. Students are invited to recite their writings and place their gemstone prize into their mother’s hand, creating a cherished memory that lasts a lifetime.

No purchase is necessary. Prizes consist of genuine gemstones and do not include mountings. Mountings are available for families who wish to have their gemstones set into jewelry.

Positive words encourage and inspire us, and the contest is based on the enduring benefits of these words. That is why it is required that every winner recite their words to their moms.

To every teacher, thank you for helping students discover the power of writing.

Be sure to join our contact list to receive information about the 2027 contest.

First-time teachers

If this is your first year participating, your students will be excited by this unique writing challenge. While not every student receives a gemstone, we consider every participant a winner for taking the time to reflect on and write about someone they love and appreciate.

If you have questions about directing winners and their families to our store, please contact us. You are also warmly invited to attend the award presentations. We would love the opportunity to meet you and share in the special moment as students recite their words and present their prizes to their mothers.
